MINDFULNESS-BASED STRESS REDUCTION

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts in 1979. It was designed to help people who were suffering with physical pain who were not finding relief with traditional methods of pain management. This well-researched program has since been shown to be helpful for a wide range of stress-related conditions. Anna Salamone was trained at The Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society that was founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn and awarded Certification as and MBSR teacher. The stress-reduction programs that she leads in Ithaca, New York are the same in form and content as those being given at the CMF. Participants in this program are self-referred or referred by their doctors to reduce stress that exacerbates cardiac, gastrointestinal, neurological, and respiratory distress, as well as for pain management of all kinds. Students have also found relief for insomnia and various forms of anxiety and depression. The program is also appropriate for those who wish to establish, or strengthen daily mindfulness practice.

Participants learn a variety of mindfulness practices including sitting, walking, eating meditations, and yoga. Also included are practices that enhance awareness and can be carried throughout the day.
This work, combined with learning about stress reactivity and coping responses, forms a foundation that helps one to develop a different relationship to stressors in daily life. The negative consequences of stress that effect us in so many ways are minimized. Cultivating a greater awareness of our life in the present helps us to shift out of “automatic-pilot” mode, and observe the workings of the mind, body and emotions. In this way, we begin to have access to a wider range of options for dealing with difficulties and distress. By entering into the process of mindfulness, one opens to the body's innate intelligence and capacities for healing and well-being.

The course consists of an Introduction, eight weekly 2.5-hour classes, and an all-day practice session which takes place on the Saturday after the sixth class. The introduction is free of charge, required for participants in the course, and also helpful for those who may be undecided.

The program fee is $425 and includes the eight 2.5 hour sessions, all-day workshop, audio recordings and other materials that support home practice during and after the eight weeks.

To assist graduates of the program in their ongoing practice, all are welcome to attend weekly guided sittings which are held at the Tompkins County Public Library, free of charge to the public. Graduates may also return for all-day practice sessions which are held at FireFly Farm Retreat in the Spring and Fall.

MINDFULNESS-BASED COGNITIVE THERAPY - MBCT

An eight-week course designed to help people who are prone to repeated bouts of
depression and chronic unhappiness
In this course cognitive therapy principles are combined with meditative practices and attitudes that are based on the cultivation of mindfulness. Participants become acquainted with the modes of the mind which often characterize mood disorders, while simultaneously learning to develop a new relationship to them.
Practices taught are designed to help participants become familiar with the workings of the mind, notice times of risk for getting caught in old habits of mind that reactivate downward mood spirals, and explore ways of releasing oneself from those habits.
The approach is referred to as MBCT and was developed by Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale. It is based on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program.
This program consists of eight weekly 2.5-hour classes, and an all-day practice session after class #6. Specific work to be done at home between classes uses audio recordings that support participants’ developing mindfulness practices. The fee for the eight sessions, all day workshop, and all course materials is $495.
